For most organizations, 2026 is the year AI becomes core infrastructure, with autonomous agents now executing actions directly: modifying records, creating accounts, and pushing code through application programming interfaces (APIs) that complete before any human can review them. Yet the security systems protecting these deployments were designed for a completely different world. Why Is the AI Security Gap So Massive? The barrier to better security isn't primarily financial. According to the survey, 34% of organizations cite business pressure to adopt AI faster than security can follow as the biggest obstacle. Skill gaps rank second at 25%, legacy tools that cannot interpret AI-specific threats rank third at 21%, and budget challenges place fourth at 14%. What Emerging Risks Should Financial Institutions Prioritize? Beyond governance and visibility, financial institutions face specific emerging threats from AI misuse. A separate international assessment identified several critical risk categories relevant to banking and fintech operations. AI-generated content is increasingly being weaponized for fraud and financial crime. The technology can now generate high-quality text, audio, images, and video convincingly enough to enable scams, fraud, blackmail, and extortion. Deepfakes are becoming more realistic and harder to identify, creating new vectors for account takeover and impersonation attacks that directly threaten banking security. Cyberattacks are another critical concern. General-purpose AI can help identify software vulnerabilities and write code to exploit them, and criminal groups and state-associated attackers are actively using AI in their operations. While AI currently plays its largest role in scaling preparatory attack stages rather than executing attacks fully autonomously, this capability gap is narrowing. Reliability challenges compound the risk. Current AI systems may exhibit unpredictable failures, including fabricating information, producing flawed code, and providing misleading guidance. AI agents operating with greater autonomy make it harder for humans to intervene before failures cause harm, a particular concern in financial services where accuracy is non-negotiable.
